Your communication and PR team have to be on a continual retainer, which means they must be available at the drop of a hat through a salaried position. The reason communication and PR should be met with these financial advantages is because they are the anticipators of your company's mission. Should something go wrong with a product, or should a person have a bad reaction to the company itself, and that person's complaint look like a lawsuit waiting to happen, then the communication and PR team must swoop in and save the day. In those sorts of events, you will gladly pay a lot more for the best communication and pr in the business. For that reason, save yourself the expense and keep them year round to always be working on your side. When handling communication and PR services though, one thing a person should try to avoid are high turnover rates. Meaning, you do not want your communication and PR minds to leave you after a short while. This is because they know more about your business than anyone. That does not mean they will be looking to use their knowledge against you, no. What it does mean, is that now a whole other communication and PR team is going to have to scramble to learn your company's history and beginnings in order to properly represent what you are doing. Whatever the instance, unless you want your business to be hidden completely from the public, look into who is going to be a strong candidate for a communications position. They will probably end up saving your reputation more than once.
