Saving Lives with Weight Loss Surgery

For people who are seriously overweight, weight loss surgery can be an option to immediately reduce their risk of death from a variety of obesity related diseases, including heart disease and cancer; losing weight can even reduce an obese person's risk of stroke. Weight loss surgery should only be considered when traditional methods of losing weight have failed to lower a person's body mass index, or BMI. Traditional methods include following a diet prescribed by a registered dietitian and a workout regime. If both of these methods have failed, weight loss surgery may be the only option left for obese people who are at risk from dying from obesity caused illness.
There are several kinds of weight loss surgery, but two of the most common types are liposuction and lap band surgery. A bariatric surgeon would perform these types of weight loss surgery. While liposuction is a popular method for immediate weight loss, it is not ideal for removing large amounts of body fat in one procedure. The risk of liposuction procedures being life-threatening increases with the volume of fat that is removed.
A better option for weight loss surgery is lap-band surgery. This weight loss surgery is safe and effective and usually results in patients losing a significant amount of weight. Lap-band surgery is performed laparoscopically, meaning that a small incision is made in the patient's stomach. The surgery is then performed through the incision using small medical-grade cameras. Because the incision is so small, patients recover quickly. This weight loss surgery takes only about an hour to perform and patients are usually only required to stay in the hospital for one night. While patients can usually return to work after one week, most patients make a full recovery in about six weeks. Lap-band surgery results in a slow, steady weight loss that is good for the body. This is because a patient's stomach is actually reduced in size by the silicone lap-band that is placed around their stomach during surgery. Because the patient's stomach is reduced in size, it cannot hold as much food. This results in a reduction in calorie intake and, ultimately, in permanent weight loss.
Weight loss surgery should only be considered after other methods have failed. As with any surgery, weight loss surgery is not without risks. Therefore, you should consult your doctor if you have any questions or concerns about weight loss surgery. Thanks to these surgical procedures, people with chronic obesity can lead long and normal lives.
