More Consumers Having to Consider Credit Cards for Bad Credit

The uncertainty of the recession has caused most people to examine their financial plans and budgets, and set a course for cutting costs and saving more. When the economy was good, carrying outstanding balances on a credit cards had been a habit of some people in this country. Some of those people are, consequently, establishing plans to eliminate their debts and improve their credit histories. Banks who offer credit cards have been hit hard by the credit crisis and economic downturn, as well. They are doing a number of things to protect their businesses. Consumers applying for a new account are confronted with more stringent lending requirements now. Higher credit scores are required to obtain the best rate cards. Even existing customers are under scrutiny. Many banks are lowering credit limits and changing rates for people with existing accounts. Banks are even closing accounts for customers whose cards have not been active recently. The percentage of debt a consumer carries relative to his available credit will automatically increase if his credit limit is decreased. That will have a negative impact on a credit score. More consumers are having to turn to credit cards for bad credit, as a result of the recession and more stringent requirements set forth by banks. Credit cards for bad credit usually come with high interest rates and fees. This often leads to the accumulation of more debt, since it is more difficult to pay down actual balances with those high rate cards.
Instead of settling for credit cards for bad credit, some experts advise those consumers to consider a credit card that has a prepaid balance. Someone cannot buy more than he can afford with a card that has a prepaid balance. The added benefit of a prepaid card is that it teaches responsible spending habits. Unfortunately, a card with a prepaid balance cannot repair credit or improve a credit score. Prepaid cards do not show up on a credit report. A credit card with a prepaid balance, however, may be perfect for a person who wants to have the ease of a credit card instead of carrying cash or checks, but is forced to consider credit cards for bad credit. Another option is to simply utilize a debit card. A lot of consumers are given one of these cards when they open a checking account. Unlike a credit card, a debit card immediately deducts the purchase put on the card from the checking or savings account. The card will not tempt someone to go on a spending spree that he cannot support. Consumers who decide to open credit cards for bad credit will want to make sure they do not carry a balance from one statement period to the next. Paying in full will avoid fees and interest.
